Undersea cable projects target West Africa

Several new undersea projects that target West Africa are getting off the ground, supported by the World Bank, the African Development Bank (ADB), and The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
The World Bank and the ADB have agreed to finance a 23-country US$280 million submarine cable project. South Africa, Rwanda, Lesotho, Tanzania and Kenya are among the countries involved, project chairman Shem Ochoudho told the IDG News Service.
The submarine cable project is a brainchild of the News Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and will stretch from Sudan, Djibouti to South Africa through the Indian Ocean.
On its part, SADC expects to start laying cable in the third quarter for an ambitious undersea regional cable network. The undersea project is aimed at improving telecommunications in the region covered by SADC, a multinational economic development organization.
The SADC region has 14 countries including Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Angola. The project will connect all countries along the west coast of Africa from Nigeria in West Africa to Namibia in southern Africa.
